The Bonsai tree must be grown in some kind of pot. There are a lot of kinds to choose from, in different shapes, sizes and colours. In order to make your choosing a lot easier, you should know what kind of pot is necessary for your tre. For the Bonsai trees with a strong trunk and bushy cornice you should choose middle sized pots. For the trees that are tall and they have branches long, you should use a tall, thin pot.
In shaping the Bonsai, a very important role is played by the shape of the pot and its color.
In Japan, they use non-enamelled pots, of a light brown color, for the coniferous trees. For any other tree, they use enamelled pots that are coloured green, grey and a lot more, even shades of blue. Trees with flowers are usually put in pots that have the same color combinations as the flowers. More, the pots for these trees may have a special shaped, the so-called “flower shape”.
Another important element is the resistance to cold. These pots are usually resistant but, it is a better choice to move the trees from their pots in soil during the winter. The pots should be kept clean and dry. The smaller trees may be fully burried in soil, including the pot.
Those that have artistic talents may even create their own pots. You can find all you need in pottery stores. When creating a Bonsai tree pot you should have as an example the Japanese and Chinese bowls. Anyway, a good advice is not to overdo it. The best pots are the neutral ones, that let the tree get all the attention.
The best suited pots for Bonsai are usually quite expensive and they come with a high maintenance cost. An option to these pots may be either creating them yourself or plastic pots. After prolongued use, the plastic pots even resamble the normal Bonsai pots because of the dust they will be covered in. Plastic pots are usually used for the trees taken from the nature (Yamadori). Often, a Yamadori must be kept in a plastic tray for several years. More, for bigger plants, it is advised to use plastic pots in order to avoid the braking of the pots.
The Bonsai collectors are usually looking for great pots. You may hear of auctioning great Japanese or Chinese pots, usually involving high prices.
