Bonsai trees may have a vast array of sizes. There are trees as small as 3inches/8cm but there are also tree as high as 50inches/130cm. This doesn’t mean that the younger trees are smaller and the older ones bigger.
Actually, the size of a Bonsai tree is established and planned ahead before you actually start cutting the first branches. Main branches are already present in the first years of trees growth. They have a very important role in shaping of the Bonsai trees.
Through the years, a Bonsai tree may grow some more inches or centimeters in height but it is usually not an important growth. The growth of the trees is more visible in the increasing number of leaves and branches.
Ideal dimensions of a Bonsai tree depend on the sizes of the leaves. The trees with small leaves can actually have any height possible you want them to grow.
The trees with bigger leaves or bigger pins have to be taller in order for the Bonsai too look natural. As an example, a chestnut tree has to be at least 47-50inches/120-150cm in order to look as a natural wild tree.
