In the spring, when new sprouts bud out and bloom, you need to remove them manually, with a pair of scissors or a tweezers. If these will be left to grow, the shape of the plant will be spoiled. All the development of the Bonsai tree will happen at the top plant, but the lower branches will die. The new buds and sprouts need to be controlled, since they will really blow off all your work in several months if you do not take care of your Bonsai tree.
The deciduous trees will be cut all the summer. You should remove all the surplus material and adapt the tree to your own desired shape and size. A small Bonsai will be let to grow while a 20-25inches/60-80cm tree will be cut a lot in order to stop the growth.
You should remove the buds and sprouts of conifers only in the spring, with a pair of scissors and the tweezers. In the summer, the sprouts that grow too much and strong will also be removed.
