In order for a Bonsai tree to look good, the leaves of the tree should match the size of the tree. A Bonsai tree 8inch/20cm sized will look strange with 4inch/10cm leaves. You could cut the leaves in order to reduce their size. Not all the deciduous trees can take this operation (you can find all these data in the description of every tree type).
Starting from June until July, when the first leaves have grown, they can be cut. In about 4 weeks, you will have new leaves, smaller and a lot more many. If the leaves will have longer tails, you should cut the surface of the leaves and let the tails on the branches. If the leaves do not have tails, you should rend them or cut them right from the branch.
The leaves that grow too much during the summer should be removed if necessary. More, you should not fertilize the soil before and after the cutting of the leaves and you should not water the plant too much either. The tree should be put in a semi shadowed place until the new leaves grow back again. Remember that cutting is not easily taken by trees so you should only cut the parts of strong and healthy plants, especially those that just suffered branch shortenings.
