Native pines have too longer pins usually, especially the black pines. These pins can grow smaller if the plant is watered with smaller water quantities and the soil is fertilized less.
In order to maintain a compact and harmonious shape with pines and firs, the young stems should be removed starting with April and until the middle May. You should remove only 1/3 or 1/2 of the new stems with the firs because, if you remove all of them, they would grow more during the summer. More, the remaining stem should be cut at 1/3 or 1/4 of their length.
Starting from September till the end of October, the 2-3 years old stems should be removed. They can be bound together and mowed.
All this method can be used successfully with Pinus Sylvestris, Pinus Mugo and Pinus Nigra.
