Finding the appropriate seeds is a pleasant activity on its own. Even by simply walking through the parks, you can find new and new types of seeds. This almost means that every seed is appropriate for growing a Bonsai tree.
The trees with bigger leaves aren’t recommended for a Bonsai tree. But, even these types of trees are loved by the Bonsai lovers and planters. If you plant the seeds of the tree in the fall, you should do this in a layer of soil or in a Bonsai pot.
There are some seeds that need to freeze once before they are able to germinate. These are the seeds with a thicker shell, like cherry tree seeds, hawthorn seeds, nut tree seeds, juniper seeds and more. Some types of seeds should be put in a flat tray, with wet sand and cover the seeds in sand. You should cover the pot with a plastic foil to keep the seeds from drying out. Them you should put the pot outside, but protected from the sun light, and you should let it outside for the seeds to freeze and crack. In the spring, these seeds will germinate. You should know that not all the seeds will germinate. You should not throw them away, but use them next winter and try the same process again. You can provoke an artificial period of freeze by putting them in a freezer, but this is far more difficult and you should only try that later, when you will be more experienced.
The seeds with a softer shell should be sowed in the fall, right after getting in.
Juniper seeds may be harvest in August and, right away, sowed. They germinate 3-4 weeks later and they must be protected by burying them in the soil so that the little trees should not dry out during the winter.
A big part of the native maples germinate right in the year of germination. In order to achieve this, follow the next process:
Put the seeds in a flat tray, filled with wet sand. Then, you water them. Finally, cover them with a piece of paper (newspaper), so that the humidity remains, but also allowing the light to go through, because the maple trees use light to germinate. In the softer winters, the first seeds should already start germinate. In the spring, when the little seeding plants already have a bark, you must plant them in small pots and, in the next summer, you should trimmer them in the desired shape.
