In order to use the layering technique with deciduous trees you should start like this: remove a portion of bark around the trunk. On this portion, attach some Sphagnum moss. Around this area, add a thin wire web that should be filled with Bonsai soil. The plant should be watered normally.
Later in the autumn, you should check the spot where you removed the bark: carefully remove the wire web, the soil and the moss. If the newly formed roots are well balanced, the web will be filled with soil again and closed back up.
You should now wait until the roots become stronger, then you should cut the trunk below these roots and plant into a new pot.
