Bonsai Trees are usual trees, like maple tree, beech, pine or spruce fir, that are planted in trays or bowls and taken care and shaped during the course of several years. Basically, every type of tree that has small, bushy, leaves is good for starting a Bonsai. Trees with big leaves are rarely used.
The Bonsai tree has not an intrinsic value. Its value is usually the value that the creator feels he/she deserves for the work. There are, usually, big, even huge, prices for a tree, especially for a good looking one. The reason is as follows:
A Bonsai tree needs many years to achieve a nice shape and to look like a mature tree. As a consequence, this requires a lot of work hours. This is why, usually, a Bonsai is quite expensive, if bought at a mature age: the creator really deserves to be rewarded for years of work. And, you should not be surprised if you will hear of huge prices for some trees, since most of the Bonsai collectors sell their most valuable, from an emotional point of view, trees for, often, huge prices. The older trees are seldom sold, as an example. But you have to ask yourself, what would a Bonsai seller be without his most representative works, to show them in order to impress the clients?
Bonsai are not inside plants and they need the natural climate. They can be stored inside, for decoration, but just for a few days.
The biggest joy when raising Bonsai is that you will be close to nature, being at the same time active and creative. This is a type of work that will always give you new and new boundaries to cross and new shapes to try.
